Godfrey Dreher Chapter Recognizes Charter Members
The Godfrey Dreher Chapter in Lexington County was chartered in October 2009. Nineteen SAR members who were members of the chapter during the first year of operation were designated as charter members. They were recognized at the chapter meeting on November 4, 2010, at which time Rev. Ted Morton, SCSSAR State President, presented Charter Member Certificates to each compatriot.
Godfrey Dreher (1720-1790) was an early German settler in the Corley Mill Road area of Lexington County and became a Revolutionary War patriot who provided supplies to the patriot army. With his family, he repulsed a force of British soldiers sent to destroy his grist mill in 1781.

Godfrey Dreher Chapter Organizational History Summary
9/17/2009– Organizational meeting led by SCSSAR Vice President for Chapter Formation Dr. Redding (Rick) Corbett and Thomas Taylor Chapter President Bryan Caskey. The name of the chapter was decided at this meeting – Godfrey Dreher, who had a fort near the Saluda River off Corley Mill Road at the site of the planned high school.Officers were elected during this meeting: President: Hampton Fuller, Vice-President: Open, Secretary: Jim McGill, Treasurer: J. B. Hensley
10/10/2009–The Godfrey Dreher Chapter Charter was presented at the SCSSAR Board of Governors’ meeting by NSSAR President General Edward F. Butler, Sr. Members receiving the charter were President Hampton Fuller, Secretary Jim McGill, Treasurer J. B. Hensley and Wayne Roberts.
2/6/2010-A training session for the new officers and members of the Godfrey Dreher Chapter of SCSSAR was conducted by Dr. Redding Corbett, SCSSAR Vice President Chapter Formation. He was assisted by Ms. Janice Lee, Granby Chapter, SCDAR. Those present for the training were President Hampton Fuller, Secretary Jim McGill, Treasurer J. B. Hensley and members Buford Mabry, Charles Nichols, and Farroll Gunter.
3/2/2010– The Godfrey Dreher Chapter of SCSSAR held a regular meeting on March 2, 2010, at Ryan’s of Lexington. Guests present at the meeting were SCSSAR President Douglas Doster and SCSSAR Midlands Vice President Jim Wyrosdick. President Fuller presided. A total of 22 SCSSAR members, CAR members, DAR members and guests were present. The speaker was Mr. Horace Harmon who presented information on Godfrey Dreher. Also, Compatriot Wayne Roberts shared information on the location of the Buford’s Massacre or the Battle of Waxhaws near Lancaster. A motion was made and seconded to establish chapter dues at $10 per year per member effective in 2010. The motion carried.
3/22/2010-The Godfrey Dreher Chapter of SCSSAR held a regular meeting on March 22, 2010, at Lizard’s Thicket at 4616 Augusta Hwy, Lexington, SC. Guest present at the meeting was SCSSAR Vice President for Chapter Formation and Alternate National Trustee Dr. Redding Corbett. Dr. Corbett is also a member of the Godfrey Dreher Chapter. President Fuller presided. A total of 10 SCSSAR members, DAR members and guests were present. The speaker was President Fuller who presented information on Francis Marion. The following officers were elected:Registrar: Horace Harmon (Acting – until membership complete); Genealogist: Don Simmons (Acting – until membership complete. Officer positions yet to be filled: Chaplain: Prayers at meetings and other events, sympathy cards to families of deceased members and other activities as appropriate. Historian: Compiles and maintains documents pertaining to the chapter (the secretary will perform this function until a Historian is elected). President Fuller formed the following committees:
- Executive Committee: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer
- Responsible for certain operational and business aspects of the chapter
- Will prepare chapter bylaws for approval by the membership
- Youth:
- Need 1-2 additional members
- Coordinate youth awards and programs as defined by SCSSAR, including JROTC, Eagle Scouts, Knight Essay, Rumbaugh Historical Oration, etc.
- Historic Sites and Patriot Graves:
- Need 2-3 members
- Identify historic sites and patriot graves in Lexington county
- Recommend appropriate actions to provide markers and ceremonies
- Recommend chapter actions for Godfrey Dreher
