MEETING MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 10,  2020 MEETING

INTRODUCTION – This meeting started at 7:00 at the Highway One Lizards Thicket, following a delicious dinner accompanied by a video of the Williamsburg Fife and Drum precision marching and music. We were excited to hear that Dr. Buddy Witherspoon has been nominated as Midlands VP, of the SCSAR. 

MEETING OPENING – Chapter President Woody Carothers welcomed 17 of our members present along with 2 members of the Col. Thomas Taylor Chapter and 7 ladies from the Granby Chapter of the DAR and one guest.

PLEDGES– Co-Color Guard Commander Gary Areheart led the Chapter in our pledges to our Country, the State and the SAR Society.

INVOCATION –  Robert Escue, Genealogist led our Chapter in a very nice prayer. 

PROGRAM SPEAKER – Calvin “Chip” Griffin, Vice-President, Colonel Thomas Taylor Chapter, SCSAR, presented Revolutionary War Pensions and Land Grants. He gave a very interesting talk and we learned how historians have learned many of the details of the participants in the battles of the revolution from their petitions and those of their widows and descendents many years after the war.

Chip is a retired fighter pilot, Air Force. Afterwards President Woody Carothers presented Chip with a Good Citizenship medal.

INSTALLATION OF OFFICERS – Woody Carothers swore in Fritz Gladfelter as Treasurer, Gary Blanpied as Secretary and Don Jones as Commander GD Militia. They  are filling vacancies and will serve until elections later this spring.

OFFICER REPORTS

Secretary Report: Gary Blanpied, Secretary stated that the minutes were approved as posted earlier online.  The sign-in sheet was passed around for attendance.

Treasurer Report: Fritz Galdfelter, Treasurer, reported that we have $637.63 in our checking account.

Registrar Report: Bill Wilson , Registrar, reported that we received word that Buck Shuler was approved by the NSSAR and would be inducted next month. Bill Wilson’s supplemental was approved. Jay McCleod and Wendell Patton are new applicants.

Board of Governors Report: Bill Wilson, Vice President reported that the state SAR has $48,000 in assets with some budget issues which would be addressed at the state meeting. There is the possibility of an increase in dues.

The best poster that school children  from Seven Oaks Elementary School submitted is being entered in the Americanism Poster contest.

Don Jones, GD Militia Commander presented our chapter gavel (from 2009) which was recently rediscovered.

Fred Morrison, Jr., Chapter Representative reported on the recent Cowpens Commemorative Event (January 18, 2020). There were about 9 from our chapter present to watch the Washington Light Infantry.

Nelson McLeod, Historian, reported on the John Dreher Grave Marking, at St. Michael Lutheran Church in Lexington, (Jan 25, 2020.) Much of our chapter, ladies from Granby DAR and many descendents of John Dreher were in attendance. Terry Gladfelter, Chair, Ladies Auxiliary, reported on all the support she got from the Granby ladies to provide the incredible reception.

Woody Carothers presented Bill Wilson with his supplemental. 

The SAR Recessional was led by Wayne Areheart, Color Guard Commander. The next meeting will be March 9, 2020.

MEETING MINUTES OF JANUARY 13,  2020 MEETING

INTRODUCTION This meeting was our first of the New Year 2020, and, of our second decade as a member of the South Carolina Society SAR and the National Society SAR.  We had hoped to “kick off” the meeting with a video of the Williamsburg Fife and Drum Corp.  But, the WIFI “Gods” did not bless us with good reception. But,  since there was a contingent of members that wanted to watch  the National Championship game, that evening, the membership seemed to be lighthearted and having a good time in spite of the disappointment..

INVOCATION – Chaplain, Hugh Ham led our Chapter in a very nice prayer that was very appropriate for the meeting first of the year initiation.

MEETING OPENING -Chapter President Woody Carothers welcomed our meeting members and guests, among which was the Chapters’ youngest compatriot, Jacob Gilliam

SPECIAL RECOGNITIONS President Carothershad Dr. Buddy Witherspoon come forward for a special announcement.  Dr. Buddy Witherspoon will be the Chapter’s first compatriot to run for a position in the South Carolina Society SAR.  Dr. Witherspoon is running for the position of Midlands Regional Vice President,
President Carothers also awarded Military Service Medals to Harold Maxwell and Buck Shuler.
In addition, He also presented Vice President Bill Wilson with his fourth Patriot Supplemental Certificate.

PLEDGES– Co-Color Guard Commander Gary Areheart led the Chapter in our pledges to our Country, the State and the SAR Society.

MINUTES – President Carothers presented the results of our online electronic voting approval/disapproval of the Chapter minutes. The minutes were approved electronically, on-line, by a majority vote of the Chapter members.  The minutes are also on the web site for historical review.

FINANCIAL & DUES – Harold Maxwell reported that the Chapter checking account balance was $637.63.  He also reminded the Chapter members that Chapter dues payment deadline has passed and that a few of our compatriots are overdue. He, and President Carothers, are resolving the outstanding issues..  Harold also announced that family issues require him to step down from the Treasurer position.  He indicated that Fritz Gladfelter had accepted the position and the transition was in process.  Our Chapter President thanked Harold for his years of faithful service and wished him , and his family, the best that God can provide.

CHAPTER POSTER PROGRAM INITIATION – Vice President Bill Wilson reported  our Poster Program was initiated at Seven Oaks Elementary School in Lexington, SC on 12/17/2019.  In addition to the poster program, the chapter provided a demonstration, by the chapters’ uniformed militia, on military dress. The finale was a power point presentation to the students on the topic of “Young Patriots in the American Revolution”.

MEMBERSHIP GROWTH – Vice President/Registrar Bill Wilson reported that we have three candidates in initial application processing and the possibility of a chapter transfer compatriot joining the chapter.  We have three candidate applications in genealogy review at the NSSAR, as well as, two NSSAR certified compatriots this year.  Finally, we have one supplemental application in review at NSSAR and one approved this month,.

JOHN DREHER GRAVE MARKING EVENT – Historian Nelson McLeod reported that we have established January 25, 2020 3 P.M. as the date for our chapters sponsoring of a grave marking event.  The grave marking event is to be held in honor of our area patriot John Dreher.  The grave marking will be held at the St. Micheal Lutheran Church in Lexington, SC.

It is anticipated that the Pastor and members of the church will be attending.  In addition, the event was scheduled to overlap the State Society Board of Governors Meeting in Columbia, SC, with the hope that State Society leadership may elect to attend the event, which will be in the afternoon.

BATTLE OF COWPENS EVENT – Historian Nelson McLeod made a presentation on our plans to attend the National SAR Battle of Cowpens Event on January 18, 2020. He requested that chapter members should contact him if they have the intention to attend.

Military Awards –  Sea  Scout Chief Petty Officer, Eric Long, was awarded the SAR ROTC Award on 12/1/2020.  The award was presented at the Naval Operations Center at Fort Jackson, SC   the award was presented by Dr. Buddy Witherspoon, our Military Awards Chairman.  Eric’s father, Joe Long , was present for his son’s award. Joe Long is Curator of the South Carolina Confederate Relic Room.  He is also a recipient of the ROTC Award.

MEETING MINUTES OF DECEMBER 9 ,2019


INTRODUCTION – The Chapters’ 10th anniversary and pre-Christmas meeting had a “little bit of something” for everyone.  Our pre-meeting dinner set the tone for the evening with smooth jazz background music videos.  Spaced throughout the meeting, between agenda topics, was a variety of “old favorite” and “totally new” Christmas music videos.

BSA SCOUTING GENEALOGY MERIT BADGE PROGRAM– Vice President Bill Wilson reported on the successful completion of the chapters new Scouting Genealogy Merit Badge Certification Program. The idea to develop the program was proposed and led by President Carothers. This was our first first Genealogy Merit Badge Class and was completed with Troop 425, a female scouting troop, from Zion Lutheran Church in Columbia, SC.  There are plans for two more classes, in the near future, with a class in the spring at the “Merit Badge  University, usually held at the University of South Carolina.  It is believed that we are the first SAR Chapter in the State to conduct a scouting merit badge certification program.

BATTLE OF GREAT CANE BRAKE EVENT – Uniformed Militiaman Fred Morrison Sr. reviewed his leadership of a militia “detail” to the Battle of the Great Cane Brake Event at the Hopkins Farm in Simpsonville, SC.  In his “detail’ was his son Fred Morrison Jr, expert rifleman and compatriot, as well as, the detail “scout” and Chapter Genealogist Robert Escue.  “Scout” Escue is noted for his ability for tracking things, especially genealogy history.
Although no redcoats were spotted, he did indicate that the local patriots were very receptive and they had a grand time.  “Sketches” of the event were brought back to “headquarters”, here at the chapter, and were reviewed and enjoyed by all.  It looks like the chapter will send the entire militia company, if ordered, next year.

GODFREY DREHER CHAPTER ESSAY WINNER PRESENTATION – Ethan James Altman, our chapters’ essay winner presented a very “heart felt” personal review of the “Cloud’s Creek Massacre”, in which his patriot ancestor was slain.  Ethan is a freshman in college majoring in history, a very fine young man.
CHAPTER CHRISTMAS MESSAGE AND PRESENTATION – Chapter Adjunct Historian Dean Hunt delivered our chapters’ best wishes for a Merry Christmas and Happy New year to our membership and our guests.  His historical presentation was on “The Story of Isaac Hayne” involving the patriotism and sacrifice of his life for his love of our country.

MEETING MINUTES OF NOVEMBER ,2019

Pre-meeting Video – The South Carolina Liberty Trail Project video was shown.   The pre-opening was dedicated to our veterans and included the song “All Gave Some, Some Gave All”.
This was a first-time technology success.  We now have the ability to connect to WIFI for video inclusion in our chapter presentations, using a “hot spot” WIFI box.  This device will allow our chapter to make video inclusive presentations wherever we have electrical power.

Presentation of Colors and Pledges – Led by Color Guard Commander Gary Areheart.

Moment of Silence for our Veterans – Led by Dr. Buddy Witherspoon, Military Awards Chairman.

Invocation – Led by Hugh Ham, Chaplain.

Opening of Meeting – Led by President Woody Carothers with recognition of four DAR guest and the Treasurer of the SCSSAR, Gordon McKay.

Induction of New Compatriot – Keith Maddox.  The short form installation was used and he was awarded his certificate and membership card along was a SAR rosette.

Approval of Minutes – Due to the absence of our Secretary, Don Jones, Bill Wilson summarized the minutes as follows:

  1. This was the membership’s first vote, on the approval of the minutes, via the email electronic voting technology.
  2. The minutes were, previously, corrected to include Dean Hunt as a recipient of the Military Service Award.
  3. The minutes were approved online, unanimously, without dissent.

Treasurer’s Report – Led by Harold Maxwell – The bank balance is in excess of $600.00.  Dues notifications had been mailed and Treasurer Maxvell  should be contacted with any questions.  Compatriot dues, for the coming year, are $75.00 total for National, State, and Chapter.  Chapter dues remain at $20.  When the invoice is received, it can be paid by PayPal, a credit card, or the invoice can be printed out and mailed with a check to the address on the invoice.

Technology Initiatives:  Technology Chairman, Bill Wilson, indicated that the mass email application is now in production.  Six mass emails have been forwarded to compatriots as of this date.  The chapter now has a total of 80 recipients now receiving our email announcements. Additionally, we are also assisting Col. Thomas Taylor Chapter, with implementing their mass mail capability.  The web site has “copies” of all emails sent for those individuals that do not have email capability, and for archive purposes of the membership.  They may be found on the “Emails” page of the web site.

Poster Contest Program – President Carothers and Vice President Wilson will be “officially” initiating the Poster Program season, on 12/17, with 90 third to fifth graders.  It will be a presentation in period dress and using Power Point.

Genealogy Merit Badge Program for the BSA – President Carothers and Vice President Wilson will also be initiating a new SAR chapter concept for BSA training of scouts to earn the Genealogy Merit Badge Certification.  The first class is Troop 425, Zion Lutheran Church on 11/19.

Registrar’s Report – Bill Wilson reports that we currently have 3 applicants in the membership certification process, 1 transfer, 2 applicants being reviewed at NSSAR, 2 approved compatriots, and 2 supplemental applications in review at NSSAR.

Recognition’s – Cal Hodges received his Veteran Recognition Award.  He served 32 years for his country.  Thank you Cal.

Historian’s Report – Nelson McLeod, presented an overview of our recent visit to Camden, SC to honor the grave of SC Governor John P. Richardson III, first President General of the South Carolina Society SAR.  10 chapter compatriots attended the event, marking the largest chapter attendance at the event. And, our uniformed color guard “doubled” to four participants, with Fred Morrison Senior and Junior joining the group.  Pictures of the event are on the web site.

Grave Marking Program – Nelson reviewed our intent to continue the Grave Marking Program after Christmas.  This will be a major chapter effort in the coming year.   He indicated that his committee is currently considering a marking at St. Michael’s Lutheran Church for the son of Godfrey Dreher.  January 25th is a possible date.

 Future Events – Nelson also indicated that there will be an event titled “The Battle of Great Crane” on December 7.  We will be sending an event mass mailer, to our mass mail recipients, in the near future.  Please respond to the mailing if you are interested in attending this event.
DAR Invitation – Terry Gladfelter, Chair of the GD Ladies Auxiliary, relayed an invitation for our members to attend the DAR Christmas Banquet.  The cost is $22.  Contact Terry for specific details.
Announcements – The GD December Christmas Banquet will be held at the usual meeting time and location.  We will start ordering at 6 pm.  We have invited Ethan James Altman to read his essay as our chapter winner of the Eagle Scout Contest.  Dean Hunt will give our Christmas message and we expect to have a video Christmas presentation.  Recognitions will be given to our officers, chairs, and other deserving individuals for their service to the SAR over the past few years.
Closing/Recessional – The evening was ended with a patriotic medley music video for our veterans, followed by Color Guard Commander Wayne Areheart leading the chapter in our recessional.

 October Meeting Minutes

14 October 2019

The monthly meeting called to order at 7 pm by President Carothers at the Lizard’s Thicket Restaurant on Augusta Road in Lexington.  Attendance included 19 compatriots, four DAR guests, one applicant, and a visiting Past SCSSAR President, Rick Corbet.  Compatriot Gary Areheart, Co-Color Guard Commander, opened the meeting with the presentation of the flags and led in our pledges.

Chaplain Hugh Ham led the invocation.  Compatriot Carothers welcomed guests and presented the minutes in the absence of Don Jones, Chapter Secretary.  The minutes were approved.

Harold Maxwell, Treasurer, presented the Treasurer’s Report.  A donation of $100 was received since the last report.  Disbursements were made for $201 for ROTC medals for the coming year and $200 the chapter has contributed toward the purchase of media equipment.  Both items were budgeted.

Compatriot Gary Blanpied was installed as our chapter’s newest member.  Dean Hunt accepted a Certificate of Appreciation for Mark Smith, of the University of South Carolina, for his assistance with the Cunningham sword displayed at the Tarrar Springs Dedication.

William “Bill” A. Wilson, Chapter VP and Registrar, presented our newest member, Gary Blanpied, with his membership certificate and membership card.  He re also introduced Jay McLeod, whose application he is processing, and Jim “Two Hawks” Brigman, III, who he is currently assisting with his application. 

Nelson McLeod, Chapter Historian, introduced Compatriot Wilson for presentation of the Eutaw Springs Streamer to the chapter and a report on the event.  Compatriot McLeod presented the King’s Mountain streamer to the chapter and a report on that event.  Compatriot McLeod encouraged participation in the Governor John Peter Richardson, III, grave marking event which will be held November 2, 2019, in Camden.  Compatriot Richardson was the first President of the SCSSAR.  Chapter members that wish to attend were encouraged to contact Nelson.

The highlight of the night was the Veterans Appreciation.  Walter P. “Buddy” Witherspoon, Chapter Military Awards Chairman, made the presentations.  Sixteen of our thirty-one members were recognized with the Military Service Medal or Military War Service Medal certificate recognitions.  A list of those recognized is attached.

Compatriot McLeod reported on the chapter’s Grave Marking Project.  Members interested in having a grave marked are encouraged to contact him.  Our first grave marking is scheduled for January.

Compatriot Carothers reported that he and Compatriot Wilson are working with a Lexington school on the Americanism Poster Contest.  Compatriot Wilson will be making a power-point presentation to about 90 third and fourth graders on December 17th.  It will be the kick-off for their participation in the Americanism Poster Contest Project.

Wayne Areheart, Co-Color Guard Commander, presented a motion that the Chapter establish a Godfrey Dreher Chapter Ladies’ Auxiliary.  It was seconded by Compatriot Wilson and carried by a unanimous vote.  Compatriot Carothers will appoint a Chapter Chairperson.

Compatriot Carothers complimented Compatriot Wilson on the leadership and effort he has given the chapter in adopting new technology in the communication and media areas which is making our meetings and projects both more efficient and more interesting.  This was the second meeting where we have used our new technology and equipment for meetings.  There were a few bugs, but overall, an outstanding success!       

Compatriot Carothers announced that the chapter will have a Christmas Banquet at the Lizard’s Thicket on the usual meeting night.  The program will include a Christmas message from Dean Hunt, a presentation to Ethan James Altman, Chapter winner of the Chapter Essay Contest, and recognition of Chapter Officers and Chairmen for their service to the chapter since its founding.  Our next regular meeting will be 11 November.

CHAPTER MEETING MINUTES OF SEPTEMBER 9, 2019

The monthly meeting of the Godfrey Dreher Chapter / SCSSAR was called to order, on the above noted date, at 7 P.M by our President Woody Carothers.  This was a milestone meeting in that it was the chapter’s first meeting utilizing a personal computer/ projector based presentation platform.

The meeting was initiated by chapter Color Guardsman, Gary Areheart, leading the membership in our allegiance pledges to the United States, South Carolina and the SAR.   

Immediately following, the chapter’s Chaplain, Hugh Ham lead the membership in a prayer of thanksgiving for all that God has provided for us. 

Chapter President then welcomed all compatriots of the SAR and DAR, friends and member candidates to the meeting.

Chapter Secretary, Don Jones, distributed paper copies of the May 2019 meeting minutes for review and approval.  A motion was made by the general membership and seconded by the same. The minutes were approved by unanimous approval, without exception.

Chapter Treasurer Harold Maxwell presented the anticipated budget for the coming business period September 2019 – June 2020. Our projected total income is $600.00; expected total expenses is $750.00 and we have an estimated $1018.00 in donated expenses and physical assets since our last meeting in May 2019.

President Woody Carothers and Vice President Bill Wilson presented, to the membership, the chapter’s first national award, the Robert B. Vance Award for web site development.

President Woody Carothers presented a recap of the chapter’s first grave marking for President Woody’s patriot, John Carothers.  The grave marking ceremony was performed in North Carolina and attending by President Woody, Bill Wilson and Don Jones, the latter two in period dress for the first time.

Chapter Registrar, Bill Wilson, reported that the chapter has 2 candidate applications being reviewed at NSSAR; 1 candidate scheduled for induction and 2 supplemental applications at NSSAR.

He then presented a recap of the recent a recap of acquisitions of chapter assets acquired to install our new presentation technology.  In addition, he presented a recap of recent web site developments.

Chapter Historian, Nelson McLeod, presented a recap of the current status of his Facebook development for the chapter.

 He then presented a recap of the four SC events attended by representatives of the chapter.  These included Huck’s Defeat, Battle of Camden, Musgrove Mill and Eutaw Springs.  He invited the membership to attend the upcoming Kings Mountain Battle Commemorative.

Nelson will also be our Chairman for chapter grave marking events in the coming year.  The membership appears to have enthusiasm for a movement in that direction.

Chapter Military Awards Chairman, Buddy Witherspoon, presented a recap of 7 ROTC Awards performed this year.  Buddy then presented information about our upcoming October meeting highlight, recognition of our veterans.  We have 15 veterans, at this time, identified for recognition at this time.

Chapter Eagle Scout Awards Chairman, Bill Wilson, presented a recap of 5 Eagle Scout Awards performed this year.

Chapter President Woody Carothers presented a recap of the SCSSAR strategic planning session that he and Vice President Bill Wilson attended.

Secretary Don Jones and Vice President Bill Wilson presented a recap of their experiences involved in period dressing and participation in a state honor / color guard for the first time. They requested other members to join them.

Adjunct Historian Dean Hunt recapped the resent completion of the chapter’s first dedication event, the Tarrar Springs Skirmish.  This event was well coordinated, well presented and received by the SAR, DAR and the community.

Chapter Colors Guardsman, Wayne Areheart, then led us in the closure of the meeting and our recessional prayer.
