GREAT CANE BRAKE COMMEMORATIVE DECEMBER 7, 2019
This was an event where the Godfrey Dreher Militia had to divide forces to accomplish our chapter objectives. One detail, under the command of “crack troopers” Fred Morrison Sr. and Fred Morrison Jr., and their faithful “scout” Robert Escue, marched to Simpsonville to support our “brothers in arms” at the 2019 Great Cane Brake Commemorative. A seperate Militia detail was sent to collect material support, for our cause, at the DAR Christmas Banquet.
Fred Morrisons’ “after action report” was totally complimentary to the Miltia and civilians they encountered. So much so that we may have to conduct a complete enmass Militia second reconnoiter next year.
GODFREY DREHER CHAPTER
– A NEW FIRST IN SCOUTING
The Godfrey Dreher Chapter, in Lexington, SC, has completed a first within the SCSSAR Scouting Program.
Godfrey Dreher Chapter recently completed their first instruction class in the “Scouting BSA Merit Badge Certification Program”. This class was for individual scouts to earn a merit badge certification in Genealogy. The class was conducted at the Zion Lutheran Church in West Columbia, SC. Troop 425 Scouting BSA, for girls completed the program.
Godfrey Dreher Chapter Instructors for the class were President Woody Carothers and Vice President Bill Wilson. President Carothers is a Scouting BSA registered MB Counselor. Bill Wilson instructed a section of the program on the subject of “Genealogical Societies” using the SAR as an example. He also dressed in period uniform for a “tangent” discussion on period military dress.
The participating scouts and their troop leaders enjoyed the presentation as can be seen in the attached pictures. The chapters’ recently acquired presentation media has been a great improvement in our ability to conduct programs of this nature. As a result of this “first venture”, two additional area scout troops have tentatively asked to be scheduled after the first of January. Additionally, there are discussions under way for the chapter to conduct the same merit badge program for the spring “University of Scouting” which is an all-day merit badge workshop which is held at the University of South Carolina.
GODFREY DREHER CHAPTER NOVEMBER 2019 MEETING
There is an old saying……if you fail, try…..try again. Well, the saying proved true in our unsuccessful attempts at presenting videos at our chapter meetings. The result is that we now have the presentation technology to attract a wide variety of presenters to our chapter, provide a professional media platform for their presentations and even produce our own professional presentations for our chapter.
Following are pictures of our meeting provided by our Chapter Historian Nelson McLeod. Thank you, Nelson!
GOVERNOR JOHN PETER RICHARDSON III GRAVE MARKING – NOVEMBER 2, 2019
What a tremendous turnout for our first chapter co-sponsored SCSSAR Grave Marking. The chapter had the largest chapter compatriot member attendance (10 members) of any of the chapters in the South Carolina Society SAR. And, our Ladies Auxiliary and DAR was well represented by Mrs. Deborah Blanpied. Deborah is the wife of Gary Blanpied, our newest Chapter compatriot. In the pictures below, you may note that Deborah is the “rose among thorns”.
Our group was led by Robert Escue, event presenter, Nelson, McLeod, event organizer, and our President Woody Carothers. We were quickly reinforced by Buddy Witherspoon. This “civilian contingent” , however, could not command as much respect as did the Godfrey Dreher Militia.
And would you believe, our Godfrey Dreher Chapter “uniformed militia” doubled in size at this event, with Fred Morrison Senior and Junior “falling in” with our more “handsome, intelligent and battle proved veterans. The nice new uniforms, of these new recruits, will be more “veteran looking” once we join Marion in the swamp. And Corporal militiaman, Don Jones, picked up a old bugle along the road, on the way to here. He plans to “lurn the darn thing”. But for right now, we just send him into the swamp to “practice”. I, also, saw “ole” Buddy Witherspoon enviously lurking around the two new recruits. I , kind of, think he might be interested in the “bounty money” offered to join, and possibly the prestige that comes with being in uniform. He would look “right debonair” in a blue uniform.
Enjoy the pictures….
GODFREY DREHER CHAPTER MEETING – SEPTEMBER 9, 2019
Wow! Our September “kick -off” meeting was something new for the attending compatriots, and very helpful to the presenters of topics to our compatriots. For the first time, our chapter has a projector, screen and computer equipment to make audio/visual presentations. Plus, our agenda presentations reflected a busy and exciting year ahead. Please join in the fun!
Our “tip of the cap” to Chapter Historian Nelson McLeod for his pictures of some of the presentations.
Commerative of the Battle of Eutaw Springs – September 7, 2019
This event was almost cancelled by the threat of a hurricane reaching the South Carolina Coast. But, it turned into a beautiful day and drive to the low country area. Woody Carothers and Bill Wilson represented the Chapter at the event, with Woody presenting our chapter wreath at the Eutaw Springs battlefield monument. Following are a few pictures of the event….
Commerative of the Battle of Musgrove Mill – August 17. 2019
What a beautiful day for a short road trip, meeting other SAR compatriots and cold homemade ice cream to boot. President Woody Carothers, Secretary Don Jones (A.K.A. patriot in the “uniformed”Godfrey Dreher Chapter Color Guard) , Meriam Lovett (DAR Laision to the Godfrey Dreher Chapter) and Don Lovett of the Godfrey Dreher Chapter were present for the wreath presentation at Musgrove Mill on August 17th. The event provided another “first” for the Godfrey Dreher Chapter. It is a great honor to announce that Don Jones is the first Godfrey Dreher Chapter member to fire a black powder musket salute to fallen patriots at a American Revolution public event…..HUZZAH!
Following are a couple of nice event pictures…..and a stand alone picture of Don Jones in period uniform.
THE BATTLE OF CAMDEN COMMERATIVE – AUGUST 10, 2019
A special “thank you” to our Compatriot and Historian, J. Nelson McLeod, for coordinating our chapter’s participation in the annual Commerative of the Battle of Camden. The South Carolina State Society SAR was well represented with over half of the state’s chapters represented at the event. Attending the event, representing the Godfrey Dreher Chapter, were the following compatriots:
President Woody Carothers, Vice President Bill Wilson, Secretary Don Jones, Historian J. Nelson McLeod and our chapter’s new SAR applicant, Buck Shuler.
The event began with a tour of the actual battlefield of the Battle of Camden, presentation of our chapter’s wreath by Chapter SAR Applicant Buck Shuler, presentations/recognition of various State and local dignataries, including our South Carolina U.S. Congressman Representative Joe Wilson, and a rousing cannon firing, in recognition of the men who fought and died upon this battlefield.
Following are two pictures selected from the event:
THE TARRAR SPRINGS SHIRMISH DEDICATION – JULY 20, 2019
The Tarrar Springs Skirmish Dedication marks the first Godfrey Dreher Chapter historical community event. The project was initiated by past Chapter President Wayne Roberts, continued by past Chapter President Don Simmons, and completed under the leadership of Chapter President Warren W. Woody Carothers. The project time frame involved multiple years of chapter leadership and involvement.
A South Carolina State Society SAR event support contingent was well lead by South Carolina State Society SAR President Nat Kaminski.
The event was co- sponsored by the Granby Chapter DAR, Lexington, SC. Without the “ladies touch”, of thf Granby Chapter Chapter, the objective would not have been the complete success that it was. A special “thank you” to Terry Gladfelter, our chapters DAR liaison, Libby Bilham DAR State Regent, and Elaine Roberts Granby Chapter DAR Regent.
A special “salute” to all of the Godfrey Dreher compatriots that participated in, or attended, the dedication. Your support, both in attendance numbers and performance quality, was well beyond expectation. A special “tip of the hat” to J. Nelson McLeod, Chapter Historian, and Dean Hunt, Chapter Adjunct Historian, for their well prepared and delivered Tarrar Springs project and historical speeches, to Gary and David Areheart, Chapter Color Guard, for event setup and the Pledges presentations, to Hugh Ham, Chapter Chaplain, for the well delivered invocation, to Don Jones and Bill Wilson, Chapter Secretary and Vice President, for their color guard participation in wool uniforms and extreme heat, to Robert Escue, Chapter Genealogist, for performing event setup and greeting duties, and to Gary Blanpied, our newest chapter member, for his K.P. duty in the refreshments tent (of course, supervised by his wife Melody).
The attendance was estimated at 80+ attendees because we exhausted our 80+ program handouts before the heat exhausted us!
